Schools

At the Every Child Swims Foundation, our mission is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn essential swimming and water safety skills, regardless of their location or financial circumstances.

At Every Child Swims Foundation, we believe every child should have the opportunity to learn essential swimming and water-safety skills. Many schools share this commitment, but the cost of installing and operating a temporary above-ground pool can create a significant barrier. The Foundation does not supply pools or fully fund programmes outright. Instead, we provide part-funding to help schools that would otherwise be unable to afford a temporary pool. Schools contribute a portion of the cost, and our grants help bridge the gap making high-quality swimming provision accessible to more children, particularly in communities where opportunities are limited. We do not work with schools directly. All applications must be made through one of our approved Temporary Above Ground Pool (TAGP) providers, who will assess your needs, confirm suitability, and manage the full application process on your behalf.

Why Choose Above Ground Pools?

Above-ground pools provide a practical, flexible and cost-effective way for schools to deliver high-quality swimming lessons directly on site. They remove the barriers associated with travelling to leisure centres and create a familiar, calm environment where all pupils can thrive.

Key Benefits

  • Reduced travel and logistics — no coaches, no transport costs, no long journeys.

  • More teaching time — pupils spend more time learning, less time travelling.

  • Familiar, less intimidating environment — ideal for SEND pupils and supportive for all learners.

  • Fully equipped and fully compliant — heating, filtration, safety systems, risk assessments and PTOPs included.

  • Flexible and temporary — no long-term construction, planning permission or permanent alterations required.

  • Consistent lesson quality — delivered by qualified swim teachers, lifeguards and pool plant operators.

  • Improved outcomes — more pupils meet national swimming and water-safety expectations.

How we support schools

  • Funding Support

We provide financial support to help schools access swimming provision at a reduced cost, easing budget pressures and removing barriers for pupils.

  • Facilities

We assist schools in securing appropriate provision with temporary above-ground pools supplied by trusted operators.

  • Improving Pupil Outcomes

With national data indicating that up to one in three pupils leave primary school unable to swim 25 metres, our aim is to support schools in closing this gap. Our programmes help pupils develop confidence, competence and water-safety skills.

  • Application Process

Schools identify an approved TAGP operator who will apply for funding through a clear and efficient process on your behalf. Once an application is submitted, our team will review the request and provide guidance on the next steps.

The Application Process

  • Step 1:

An approved Temporary Above Ground Pool (TAGP) Operator may identify your school as one that would benefit from supported swimming provision, or your school may reach out directly if traditional swimming access is unaffordable or unavailable.

  • Step 2:

The TAGP provider secures a signed letter from the headteacher, confirming that the school satisfies the eligibility requirements.

  • Step 3:

The TAGP provider completes and submits the online application form to progress the approval process.

  • Step 4:

The foundation conducts a full review of the submitted application, usually completed within 4–6 weeks.

  • Step 5:

Once the application is reviewed, the approved TAGP provider receives an email confirming the decision, and, if successful, the school is added to the funding waiting list.

  • Step 6:

Once funding becomes available, the TAGP provider is notified and is required to confirm the delivery request to the school within 12 months of the original approval.

  • Step 7:

After the programme is delivered, the TAGP provider compiles and submits a full delivery and impact report.
